It is necessary to take good care of your vagina and maintain its health. Maintaining proper hygiene and eating good foods play an important role in maintaining a healthy vagina. You can use certain home remedies to keep your vagina healthy and treat vaginal infections. Here a few tips that you might useful.

Don’t Douche

Home remedies that involve douching were widespread in the past. Unfortunately, many women still use douching to clean their vagina. Douching removes the good bacteria residing in your vagina that keeps it healthy. As a result, the yeast and infection-causing bacteria can overgrow in your vagina.

Douching also disrupts the pH balance of your vagina. Your vagina is delicate and cannot withstand douching. Also, it is self-cleaning, and you certainly do not need to do any douching.

Wear Breathable Clothing 

Breathable underwear keeps your vagina happy. Avoid wearing synthetic fabrics like nylon and spandex. Synthetic fabrics do not let your vaginal area breathe properly. It traps, heat and moisture creating the ideal ground for breeding yeast. Wearing pure cotton undies is best.  It is breathable, absorbent, and avoids the chances of developing yeast infections.

Eat Greek Yogurt or Take Probiotics

Maintaining the pH balance is necessary for a healthy and clean vagina. Taking probiotics enhances healthy vaginal flora and maintains the pH. What is a better source of probiotics than plain Greek yogurt? Yogurt has the probiotics that are part of the vaginal flora.

If you have a vaginal infection, it is necessary that you eat a cup of Greek yogurt daily. It helps to treat the overgrowth of yeast and pH imbalance that causes the infection. Make sure you are taking pure Greek Yogurt with no added sugar. Sugar will help the yeast to grow instead of preventing it.

Here are methods that many women claim that are effective. But you should be informed that none of these methods are not backed by science. You can try them and if they don’t work then you should plan on seeing your doctor.

Oregano Essential Oil

The oregano essential oil can help treat yeast infections as it contains powerful antifungals.  Look for oil of oregano made from the wild oregano. Oregano oil is a blood thinner, so do not use it if you are taking blood-thinning medicines. Also, do not use it if you have blood-clotting problems.

You should not be eating or applying it anywhere near your vagina. You are supposed to massage your body with it and inhale it as a part of aromatic therapy. Mix 3-5 drops of Oregano oil and dilute it per ounce of carrier oil. Then apply it on your body.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has many health benefits. You can directly apply pure and organic coconut oil on your vagina. You can even use it for lubricating if your vagina feels dry. Coconut oil has antifungal properties, especially against Candida type of yeast that mainly causes vaginal infection. So using coconut oil is an effective home remedy for treating yeast infection.


Studies have shown that garlic has strong antifungal properties against Candida. You may find some websites telling you that you can directly apply garlic for vaginal yeast infection. However, such remedies are nothing but a hoax. There is no doubt over the fact that garlic can kill Candida. So, if you want to try garlic for treating yeast infections, try to add it more in your diet.
